Rebuild bridges on time, get perks: BMC

- STAFF REPORTER /

The BMC will spend Rs95 crore on the reconstruction of the seven bridges in the eastern and western suburb. A proposal was tabled and approved in the Standing Committee meet on Wednesday. BMC kept a new rule of reward or penalty for the contractors to finish the work on time. The BMC’s bridges dept had decided to raze and rebuild the city bridges in the suburbs. For the reconstruction of the 7 bridges, BMC will spend Rs95,42,22,887. The bridges dept chief engineer, Sanjay Darade, said, “The work will start after obtaining various permissions and NOCs. Till 2020, all the bridges will be ready.’

“We have started with a new rule of giving an incentive of 0.01 per cent to the contractor to finish the work early or on a given time. Also, they will be penalised at 0.02 per cent of the total construction cost. For now, this term has been attached only for the 7 bridges. We will continue with the term on getting a positive result,” said Darade.

BMC chief’s new recruits Meanwhile, BMC chief Praveen Pardeshi has hired 15 people to keep a tab on the working of civic officials. The 15 candidates were recruited based on a fellowship. Of them, 2 will be posted in the mayor and standing committee chairman’s offices. The other 13 will directly report to Pardeshi. They will draw up to `1,25,000 pm.

BMC opposition leader, Ravi Raja wondered if the chief has no faith in employees. “In BMC offices, hospitals, education dept everywhere, private contractors are active. Doctors in civic hospitals get Rs40,000 pm, whereas work is outsourced and new people are hired and paid highly,” he said.
