CJ Tahilramani bids adieu to Madras HC
Former Chief Justice Vijaya Tahilramani on Friday bid her final adieu to her stint at the Madras High Court. In her final address to the members of the Madras Bar Association, CJ Tahilramani claimed she disposed of over 5000 cases in last one year of her stint in the HC. CJ Tahilramani initially expressed how ‘attached’ she is with Chennai and Tamil Nadu and how she planned to settle in the city. “We (me and my husband) were thinking of settling down, but fate had different things in the store. Now, we will think again and give it a re-thought,” CJ Tahilramani said, probably hinting at the recent controversy pertaining to her transfer at the Meghalaya HC. In her brief speech, CJ Tahilramani also thanked the bar and her colleagues for being ‘supportive and cooperative’ in the last one year.“Because of the cooperation of all the members of the bar and my colleagues, I could dispose of more than 5,000 matters, which I think is a reasonable number. And because of the cooperation of the bar, we did not extend arguments beyond a certain point and therefore, I could finish my cause list – with an average of 75 to 80 matters – very quickly, and I could rise from the court quickly,” CJ Tahilramani said, again hitting out at the ‘probable’ reason for her sudden transfer. Notably, former SC judge Justice Markandey Katju had claimed that CJ Tahilramani could have been transferred for her ‘short working hours.’
