- STAFF REPORTER

Nagpada police has arrested a 28-year-old man for allegedly killing a woman and also injuring a man who tried to intervene to rescue the victim. The accused has been identified as Jintendra Kumar Singh, a resident of Naigaon in Vasai. The woman was killed over Rs 100, which she owed him.

According to the Nagpada police, the woman who is aged 30 was a sex worker. On Sunday night, when Singh visited her, he had given her Rs 500 and demanded that she return him Rs 100. The woman refused, which led to an argument between them.

Singh got infuriated over her refusal and when he realised that she would not return the money, he removed a knife from his bag and attacked her. Singh has a catering business and hence kept a kitchen knife in his bag.

When he attacked her, she tried to defend but received injuries on her neck and hand. She collapsed and started bleeding profusely, which scared Singh and he fled from the spot immediately. A pedestrian, Shahabaj Merchant, saw Singh escape and tried to stop him, but Singh stabbed him too in the chest. In the meantime, a police team from a chowky next to the spot where the incident occurred, came quickly and apprehended Singh.

The woman and the man were rushed to Nair Hospital. The woman could not survive and died due to excessive bleeding. While Merchant is still admitted in the hospital as his condition is said to be critical.

Singh was later booked under Indian Penal Code section for murder (302) and attempt to murder (307), he was produced before Girgaon court on Monday, which sent him to police custody, till October 19.
