‘I have no issues with getting limited roles’

Says Diljit Dosanjh, as he speaks to Sonali Pitale Joshi about his upcoming movie Good Newwz, working with Akshay Kumar and more

Diljit Dosanjh is gearing up to play a lead role in Good Newwz, which also stars Kareena Kapoor Khan, Akshay Kumar and Kiara Advani. The soft-spoken actor and man of limited words, while speaking about how the movie fell into his lap, says, “I heard the script and did not react to it because I was not sure if they are actually offering it to me or not. Prior to this, makers had called me for narrations, post which there was never a call back from their end. So I thought this time around also same it’ll be the same so I heard the script half-heartedly. They gave me the script and liked it after I read it. Nobody has spoken about this topic before. In fact I was also not aware about it and had to Google to increase my knowledge on the subject. Karan sir then called and said he wants me to do this film and I immediately said yes because I liked my role. I was the last person to come on board.”

Talking about working with Akshay, he says, “Akshay sir’s comic timing is amazing. I did a film with Kareena (Udta Punjab), but that was a different genre. Here, I had lot of fun working with them. His body language is also good and without even speaking anything he can enact a scene so well.”

Ask him about his singing career and he is quick to add, “I have sung a song in this film too. I travel for my shows and when I am on stage I don’t even remember that I am an actor.”

Coming to the movie, Diljit reveals he could not relate to his character. “I am completely different from my character. When I see this character on screen I feel ‘who is this man, he is so loud’. I can never behave like him in real life. I can never barge into someone’s house uninvited. In fact, I don’t even go to people’s house despite being invited many times.”

Diljit had once said because of his appearance, he gets limited work. Is there any change in what he thinks? “I have no issues with getting limited roles. I am happy with the kind of work I get. I don’t feel bad about it and now I am getting quite a few offers.” Criticism is a part and parcel of an artiste’s life. Ask him about what he feels about facing criticism he says, “Good films will do well. Films which do not work also teach you something. Sometimes you choose something wrong or sometimes it is not been executed well. Getting a film and getting a good role ,is not depending on you. In fact what you choose also doesn’t depend on you.”
