Jamia VC tactfully handles ‘gherao’
NAJMA AKHTAR SAYS VARSITY WILL MOVE THE COURT FOR FIR AGAINST POLICE, ITS BRUTALITY
Jamia Millia Islamia ViceChancellor Najma Akhtar on Monday tactfully handled the students’ crowd encircling her office as she came out and assured them that she would approach the court for registering an FIR against Delhi Police on its unauthorised entry and violence on the campus on December 15. She told the agitating students: “We had initiated a complaint but the police didn’t register an FIR. We have also sent an objection to the government. Now, we will move the court against this inaction as the police had entered the campus without permission and hence we want an FIR be registered against them.”
The V-C clarified she had not issued any notice to vacate hostels after the violence and declaration of cancellation of the ongoing semester exams till further notice. The new schedule will be declared later. The students were demanding an FIR against police for assault on some of them on Dec 15. The V-C also announced beefing up of security on the campus as demanded by the students.
The students were quite happy as the V-C, assisted by other top administrative officers, responded to their demands. She said the process to register FIR will begin on Tuesday. “Don’t ask me exact dates. When I said today that FIR will happen, that means it will happen,” she affirmed.
The call for Monday’s protest was given by the students-led Jamia coordination committee against alleged police excesses and damage to the university property on Dec 15. The V-C assured students on the campus are safe.
Meanwhile, CPI had to cancel a meet to be addressed by former JNU Students Union chief Kanhaiya Kumar in Hyderabad on Monday as police denied him permission.
