AASU president hints at forming new political party in Assam

- JAYANTA KUMAR GOSWAMI

Keeping aside speculations regarding formation of a new political party following the on-going massive protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) across the state, front-ranking students’ body, All Assam Students Union (AASU), has hinted out forming a new political party ahead of the forthcoming State assembly polls.

Addressing a public meeting organized as a part of Magh Bihu celebrations in Goalpara on Wednesday, AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath said that the process for formation of the new political party will start from February onwards.

“We are keeping our fingers crosses over the whole issue. The process will start from February this year.

This new political outfit may be an alternative for Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), BJP and of course the Congress party in Assam. This new party is likely to be flag bearer of nationalism in Assam,” Nath announced.

Coming down heavily on various issues, especially on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), the AASU leader castigated the BJPled government at both Centre

and the State for their alleged anti-people policies.

Despite the state government initiative for a “compromise” formula to break the deadlock on the on-going stir on the CAA, the AASU leader also categorically announced that there won’t be any compromise on the issue. “We won’t accept CAA. This act must be scraped,” he added.

As a part of the protest against the CAA, Nath also burnt the copies of CAA in “Meji” fire. People from different sections of the society, artistes, social activists and many others also burnt the copies of the CAA in “Meji” fire across Assam following a call from the AASU leadership to register their protest against the CAA.

Assam is celebrating Magh Bihu these days and “Meji” fire is considered auspicious to defeat all evils forces of the society.
