- JESCILIA KARAYAMPARAMBIL

All tax-free investment options will take a hit, if the new direct tax proposal is introduced and most (or all) taxpayers decide to shift to new regime. Analysts said the optionality clause for investment in such instruments, will be a huge disincentive.

Investment options like real estate may not be hit as much as other instruments like insurance, mutual funds etc. An analyst, who did not wish to be named, said, “This will hit the insurance sector which was driven due to these tax exemptions. The insurance will feel the pinch at least in the shortterm. There will be drop in first-time premium collected by the companies.”

Another analyst, who is familiar with the sector, said, “While it looks like a short-term gain, but this will hurt the social fabric in the long-run. This is disincentivising savings and investments.”
