Bizman, 35, rams Jaguar into parked tempo, dies

- PRIYANKA NAVALKAR Mumbai

It was a terrible lockdown on Tuesday as far as road accidents were concerned. A 35-year-old businessman, identified as Hitesh Golchha, died after he rammed his Jaguar into a parked tempo, a few metres away from MIDC police station in Andheri (E), on Tuesday night.

Seriously injured, Golchha was rushed to the civicrun Cooper Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries early on Wednesday, said police. While officials are awaiting a postmortem report to ascertain if he was driving under influence of alcohol, a senior policeman said there was a strong, distinctive odour emanating from Golchha. MIDC Police have registered an accidental death report (ADR) in the matter.

In an incident which had occurred earlier in the evening of the same day, the 18-year-old son of a businessman was killed and his friend seriously injured when their speeding car collided with a stationary bus at Marine Drive in South Mumbai.

According to a senior police officer, Golchha, the director of Kamal Air Auto Pvt Ltd, was driving rashly and speeding when he lost control of his car and crashed into a divider, before ramming into a parked tempo around 10.20pm on Tuesday. However, nobody else was injured. A police team from the MIDC police station rushed to the spot after being alerted about the incident and took him to Cooper Hospital. Ankit Goyal, DCP, (Zone 10), said the postmortem would determine whether he was driving under the influence of alcohol and the report was awaited. "Golchha, a resident of Gulmohar Road in Andheri (E), set off without a valid reason and was in violation of the lockdown rules. While he was earlier booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for disobedience of orders promulgated by public servant and rash driving, it was later turned into an ADR," said DCP Goyal. Sources said Golccha had purchased the Jaguar car earlier this year and was an automobile buff. Two years ago, Golchha was involved in another accident and had injured several people, including kids, near Versova. Golchha had damaged at least 10 vehicles, including his own, a black Jaguar.
