Classes X, XII boards stand cancelled: CBSE, ICSE to SC
The CBSE on Thursday cancelled pending Class 10 and 12 examinations slated from July 1 to 15, giving a choice to the 12th students to sit for the examinations later when conditions are conducive or accept results on the basis of internal assessment marks.
Full clarity on the assessment method and the 12th examination of the state boards will come on Friday when the Supreme Court asked the Centre to modify the draft notification by including the state boards after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre and CBSE, said the results will be out by middle of August and as such the academic year shall be shifted for the 2020-21 session. The CBSE was asked to come on Friday with a fresh notification on the option and the assessment method to add marks.
A 3-judge bench of Justices A.M. Khanwilkar, Dinesh Maheshwari and Sanjiv Khanna was hearing a plea filed by parents seeking a stay on the board exam for remaining papers in July, fearing that it may lead to many students get infected by the virus.
The CBSE decision ought to lead to postponement of the two competitive exams -- the medical entrance exam NEET on July 26 and the JEE-Mains for undergraduate engineering and technical courses, including IIT, from July 18 to 23. The lawyer of the petitioner parents also wanted to raise the issue of the entrance exams, but the Court refused to deal with it at this stage.
Class X examinations,
which could not be completed only in the Northeast in March due to the coronavirus, will not be held and the students will be given marks based on three previous exams. The Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) Board also told SC it was cancelling both
class 10 and 12 board exams, but it won't give option to students to write exam later.
The Solicitor General told the court Delhi, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu have conveyed inability to conduct the examinations as the coronavirus is still raging in their states.
