BENGAL BJP MLA FOUND HANGING

- PREMA RAJARAM

The body of BJP MLA Debendranath Dey was found hanging on Monday near his village home in Bindal village of North Dinajpur district. The West Bengal BJP unit alleges it is a cold blooded murder. The North Bengal BJP unit is at the spot to assess the situation and find out who could be behind the murder. No FIR was filed yet.

According to villagers, Dey was asked to come out of his house by people who were on motocycles. Dey was taken to a nearby tea stall. It is unclear what happened thereafter, whether there was an altercation before the BJP MLA was found hanging near the tea stall. The

BJP unit believes Dey was first killed before he was hung. Dey was a CPI(M) MLA in 2016 and joined BJP in 2019. The exact cause is yet to be ascertained, but his family claims it was a personal enmity.

“People killed him, he was found hanging. There was enmity, he was called at 1.30am from the house. He was at home. I think he was killed. We don’t know who called him. We want the perpetrators to be hung. He was called before, but this time they killed him,” said Prati Burman, Dey’s daughter-inlaw.

“He was here at night at the tea stall. He had come to take his signature after which he went home. After that around 1am, a mototcycle went past the house, everyone was asleep. He told my aunt, he will be back. But he did not come back all night. Then I came here and saw this horrific sight. I think miscreants killed and hung him. He was the current MLA. We want a CBI inquiry,” said Jitesh Chandra Rai, Dey's nephew.

There is no clarity whether any political party was involved in the murder.

The suspected heinous killing of Debendra Nath Ray, BJP MLA from Hemtabad in West Bengal, is extremely shocking and deplorable. This speaks of the Gunda Raj and failure of law and order in the Mamata government. People will not forgive such a govt in the future. We strongly condemn it. — JP Nadda, BJP President
