Day of mixed fortune

-

It was a day of mixed fortune for the teams. While, Watford’s hopes of avoiding relegation suffered a double blow as they were thrashed 4-0 at home by Manchester City and then slipped into the Premier League relegation zone. Aston Villa for whom relegation was staring at them escaped out surprising Arsenal by a solitary goal. With the top positions already assured, it is the race of survival in the English Premier League as the season nears its campaign this year.

Trezeguet scored the only goal as Aston Villa moved out of the relegation zone on goal difference with a 1-0 victory against Arsenal at Villa Park.

The result means that Dean Smith's side travel to West Ham United on the final day with their Premier League destiny now in their own hands after Watford dropped to 18th following their 40 loss to Manchester City.

Trezeguet rifled home his third goal in as many matches after 27 minutes when Conor Hourihane's corner was flicked into his path by Tyrone Mings.

Moments after Villa substitute Keinan Davis fired a great chance for a second wide, Arsenal nearly found an equaliser when Eddie Nketiah's 77thminute header came back off the inside of the post before bouncing kindly into Pepe Reina's hands.

But Villa held on to climb up to 17th. Arsenal remain 10th on 53 points, with their top-six hopes coming to an end.

Raheem Sterling's first-half double set Manchester City on their way to a 4-0 victory against Watford that means the Hornets' relegation battle will go to the final day.

Watford, who were managed by Hayden Mullins after Nigel Pearson's departure, went behind on 31 minutes when Sterling fired the ball into the top-left corner.

Sterling scored his 19th goal of the season to double Man City's lead on 40 minutes, when he followed up quickly after his penalty was saved by Ben Foster. The City winger was fouled by Will Hughes for the spot-kick.

Phil Foden added a third on 63 minutes after Sterling's effort was parried by Foster.

And it was 4-0 just four minutes later, this time Aymeric Laporte heading in from Kevin De Bruyne's 19th assist of the campaign. Second-placed Man City are up to 75 points.
