Cop hurt as 3 ‘kids’ break lockdown norms in Kolkata

- PREMA RAJARAM

A constable of Tiljala police station was injured, along with two civic volunteers, trying to stop a car flouting the complete lockdown on Saturday in Kolkata. In view of the sharp rise in Covid-19 cases, the West Bengal government has called for a complete lockdown twice a week from 6am to 10pm. Apart from essential services, vehicles are not permitted.

Traffic police spotted a brown car with two boys and a girl at Science City on EM Bypass at 7am and flagged it. Instead of stopping the vehicle, the driver sped away and took the flyover, leading to Patuli area on the bypass. Police informed their colleagues on the other side of the flyover, who tried to intercept the car. The driver refused to give up and tried to escape, but banged into the barricade, injuring the cops and two civic volunteers. He then reversed the car but the police placed a barricade. Locals stopped the car and the youths were nabbed.

“They tell me they know the law, they don’t know anything. They have broken the law. My duty started at 6am and the incident occurred. I will go to a clinic closeby for my injury but will be back on duty,” said Mrinmoy Das, Tiljala police constable.

One of the boys was behind the wheel while the girl who was reportedly inappropriately dressed was sitting in the front seat. The boys appeared to have been drunk. They were pulled out and forcefully put into the police vehicle, as they attempted to defend themselves and asked the police to let them go.

The girl meanwhile kept sitting in the car, hiding her face and refused to get out. She was seen calling someone over her mobile phone. It was only when a lady cop reached there the girl was forced to get out. The three were taken to the Tiljala police station.

The wild goose chase was caught on camera as police constable has cameras on their uniforms. The boys tried to argue with the police and kept repeating they knew the law. The boy behind the wheels said the car did not belong to him.
