Rains hit Odisha; landslides in Goa

Heavy rains triggered by a low-pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal battered many parts of Odisha and the weather office on Wednesday forecast that rainfall in the state will persist till Sunday. In view of this, the Odisha government has asked all district administra­tions to closely monitor the situation.

"The district administra­tion should remain in readiness to meet any eventualit­y. Advice for fishermen should be strictly followed," Special Relief Commission­er PK Jena said in an advisory to the district collectors.

Issuing an orange warning for several districts till Thursday, the weathermen said heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at some places in Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Sundargarh, Nuapada, Bolangir, Sonepur, Boudh and Angul during the period.

The orange warning is issued to indicate weather conditions that have the capacity to impact the life of people significan­tly.

Road, rail traffic hit

Rail and road traffic to and from Goa was disrupted on Wednesday due to landslides along the Goa-Karnataka border following heavy rain in the region.

"There has been a landslide at Chorla ghat road. It will take six hours to clear the road. Public is advised not to travel via the road," the statement issued by the CMO said on Wednesday afternoon.

5 labourers killed

Five labourers died and two were injured when a newly constructe­d wall of a factory collapsed due to heavy rains near Silvassa city in the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, police said on Wednesday. The labourers had been living in a temporary shelter near the compound wall.
