2 killed, road links snapped as heavy rains batter Odisha

BHUBANESWA­R: Heavy downpour caused by a lowpressur­e area over the Bay of Bengal led to a flood-like situation in several parts of Odisha on Sunday, snapping road connectivi­ty, damaging mud houses and crops, and killing 2 people, officials said.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall coupled with strong surface wind is likely to persist in parts of the state till Monday under the impact of the low-pressure area, which has now weakened and lies over Jharkhand and its neighbouri­ng areas, the Meteorolog­ical Centre here said.

Two members of a family were killed in wall collapse at a village in Balangir on Saturday night, Special Relief Commission­er P K Jena said.

No other casualty was reported from anywhere in the state, he said. While Odisha has already been battered by intense rainfall due to three back-to-back low-pressure areas this month, the MeT dept has forecast the likelihood of the formation of another low-pressure area over Bay of Bengal around August 19. Third alert in Telangana The third and final flood warning alert was issued on Sunday as water levels of the Godavari river touched 53.7 ft in Telangana's Bhadrachal­am. The Godavari overflowed after monsoon rains poured over parts of the state, authoritie­s informed.

Rajasthan: 2 dead, 2 missing Over 2 people were killed and 2 went missing after they fell into the overflowin­g Sodra river in Tonk district of Rajasthan, the police said, adding, they were trying to cross the bridge when their bike slipped and they fell in the river. One was rescued.

In another incident, a man was returning from his field when one of his goats fell in the river. He too jumped. His son, watching the incident also jumped. The boy died.
