Building collapses in Dongri and Nalasopara

A senior citizen was killed af ter a portion of a ground-plus-seven storeyed residentia­l building Razzaq Chamber collapsed in Dongri, early on Wednesday morning. The woman, identified as Mumtaz Sudhanwala (65), was declared brought dead by JJ Hospital.

The mishap took place at around 7:20 am at Mahamandal Building Chowk near Ratnadeep Bar, opposite Bharat Petrol Pump. According to the preliminar y informatio­n, some parts of the third to seventh floors of the rear side of the building collapsed.

"As many as six people were rescued by the Mumbai Fire Brigade. However, Sudhanwala was trapped under a staircase that had collapsed. She was removed and rushed to the JJ Hospital, where she was declared 'brought dead'. The reason behind the collapse is yet to be ascertaine­d. It was a cessed building, officials of MHADA will look into the matter," said an official from BMC's disaster management unit. Meanwhile, in another incident, a fivestorey building crumbled like a pack of cards on Achole road in Nalasopara's Majithia Park half past midnight. The building was 25 years old and was declared dangerous by Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporatio­n (VVMC).

As many as five families, comprising 22 people, escaped the mishap unhurt. The VVMC had declared the building dangerous and evacuation notices were issued to 20 families/flat owners. While 15 families moved out, five flat owners continued to live in the dilapidate­d building, citing they cannot afford a rented place.

According to eyewitness­es, they heard noise of rubble crumbling post 11.30 pm. When they came out to see, they saw people from the building rushing out. Post 12 am the building crashed to the ground. Meanwhile, in Mumbai, following several cases of building collapse this monsoon in the city, the BrihanMumb­ai Municipal Corporatio­n has resumed its drive to vacate and demolish dilapidate­d buildings. The BMC had stopped its crackdown on such buildings in April this year owing to the pandemic induced lockdown. According to BMC's data, total 443 buildings across the city have been listed as dilapidate­d and have been marked for demolition by the end of 2020.
