Another Murray epic

-

It was another busy day at the 2020 US Open, with a list of marquee names hoping to begin their quest for a trophy in New York. Serena and Venus Williams played back-toback matches in Arthur Ashe Stadium, but only after Andy Murray fought a marathon battle to supercharge his comeback from hip surgery. The day also saw the return of three-time US Open champion Kim Clijsters, who took the court at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center for the first time since her 2012 retirement.

For the second straight day, play continued under the lights past midnight. Here's our look on how it all unfolded.

The first match in Arthur Ashe Stadium turned out to be the match of the day. It looked like finishing as a forgettable straight-setter, with

Murray down two sets and a break against Japan's Yoshihito Nishoka. But the Scot roared back to win the third in a tiebreak, then took another breaker in the fourth and won it in five.

Serena Williams won her first straight-sets match since the Australian Open, defeating Kristie Ahn, 7-5, 63, in Ashe. She had to wait for Murray to finish his marathon before taking the court, but the No. 3 seed wasted no time once she left the locker room. Also victorious in Ashe was 2019 US Open finalist Daniil Medvedev.

Other former US Open champions graced the schedule, including 2017 champ Sloane Stephens, a straight-sets winner over Mihaela Buzarnescu. Marin Cilic, our 2014 champ, got through in five against American Denis Kudla, while three-time champion Kim Clijsters saw her US Open return spoiled by Ekaterina Alexandrova.
