UP Oppn seeks martyr status for dead ryots

- SRAWAN SHUKLA /

Raising the farmers’ issue in UP Assembly, Opposition Samajwadi Party (SP) has demanded martyrs' status to farmers who died during the ongoing agitation.

Disruption marked the second day of proceedings in the state legislature. Members of SP, BSP and Congress stormed the Well and raised antigovernment slogans when their demand for holding a discussion on farmers’ agitation was ignored by Speaker HN Dixit. Amid noise and din, the Speaker adjourned the house for an hour.

Leader of Opposition Ram Govind Chowdhary said many farmers died during the stir but the government has not done anything for their families. “The state government should accord the status of martyrs to farmers who died during the agitation,” demanded Chowdhary. Oppn creating anarchy: CM CM Yogi Adityanath slammed the Opposition parties on the floor of the House charging them with creating anarchy in the country by inciting ryots to protest against the three Farm Laws which are meant for their welfare and to double their income.

The CM was angry over opposition parties disrupting house proceedings and staging frequent walkouts over farmers’ agitation. CM Yogi said that the measure taken by the Modi government for the welfare of farmers was hurting the political interests of Opposition parties and their pockets too.

“Many of them have not even read the Farm Laws, yet they are creating anarchy in the garb of farmers’ agitation to serve their political interests. There is a democratic way of resolving issues, if there are any. The Prime Minister has given an open offer for further dialogue, yet they continue to incite farmers,” he fumed.
