Atmosphere of fear Top‐notch care is vital Welcome ban Worst of times

- C K Subramaniam

Hearing about the current Covid situation all day long, from all quarters is creating an unwanted scare. Many incidents are being reported across the nation about people dying from the fear of contracting Covid. A positive campaign in this chaotic situation is need of the hour. People who have recovered from coronavirus should help dispel such fears. No doubt, the second wave is severe in India but not every person who tests positive requires a bed in hospital and needs oxygen. It’s mostly for patients who are already suffering from comorbidities and in those cases where people started treatment very late. Be aware, but don’t panic.

Ref.: ‘Never asked for 100-bed 5-star Covid facility: HC’ (April 28), mistake or no mistake, patients are rightfully entitled to have the very best facilities when undergoing treatment. This helps them get well soon. Good health and well-being are vital for a meaningful life. So, it is absolutely fine to hold hospitals to high standards – the nation’s health depends on it.

Ref.: 'EC ban on V-rallies' (April 28). In the light of increasing corona cases, the Election Commission has banned victory processions of the winning candidates. This decision is most welcome. One hopes this tradition is permanently banned. Joy should be for social work, not for electoral victory!

In the last few days, we have witnessed an utter breakdown of our public health system, with no leadership available to address the issue. While people are falling like ninepins, our esteemed leaders are scrambling around blaming each other or taking credit. What India needs right now is an able crisis manager and we just don’t have one. It is heartbreaking to read about Covid patients dying without oxygen or in hospital fires. Others are unable to find medicines or hospital beds on time. These are the worst of times to be in.
