UP govt imposes 3-day lockdown

A day after being slammed by the Allahabad High Court for not enforcing a 14-day lockdown, the Yogi Adityanath government has extended weekend lockdown by another day. Now, Uttar Pradesh will be shut for three days, starting from Friday 8 pm till Tuesday 7 am. Emergency and essential services will, however, will be allowed during the three-day lockdown period like previously.

The government has also extended closure of all private and government schools including Madrasa Board from Class 1 to 8 up to May 20.

Earlier, the primary and secondary schools were closed till May 15.

Basic Education Minister Satish Dwivedi said teachers have been allowed to work from home to conduct online classes till May 20. Students of Class 1 to 8 were promoted by the state government without holding their annual examinatio­ns. The Allahabad University has also cancelled its examinatio­ns, scheduled to be begin from Aril 30.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Shikshak Mahasangh has claimed that about 577 teachers, who were on panchayat poll duties, have died so far due to coronaviru­s across the state. The Mahasangh has urged the State Election Commission to defer counting on May 2.

The Mahasngh has submitted names of 577 basic education teachers who succumbed to the deadly virus while performing poll duties in 71 districts of the state. UP records sudden jump in fatality count

Uttar Pradesh on Thursday recorded the highest singleday fatality count after 298 patients succumbed during treatment, taking the total death count to 12,241. The state also witnessed a sharp jump in active cases to 35,156 against 29,824 recorded on Wednesday.

The State Health officials are clueless over sudden variation in active cases. Only 266 deaths were recorded on Wednesday.

UP IAS Associatio­n Chairman Deepak Trivedi dies

A day before his retirement, the Chairman of Revenue Board and UP IAS Officers’ Associatio­n, Deepak Trivedi, succumbed to coronaviru­s on Thursday morning at the SGPGIMS. A 1985 batch bureaucrat, Trivedi was the seniormost IAS Officer in the UP cadre, having largest contingent in the country. Trivedi tested positive about a fortnight ago. He was admitted at the SGPGIMS after he developed respirator­y trouble and severe lung infection.
