There has been a drop in the number of Covid-19 cases across Maharashtra on Friday, with 21,273 new infections and 425 Covid deaths being reported in the last 24 hours, pushing its tally to 56,72,180 with 92,225 fatalities till now. It is the lowest single-day case reported since March this year.

Mumbai has witnessed a slight drop in the number of Covid cases on Monday, with 1,266 new infections and 36 Covid deaths being reported in the last 24 hours, increasing its total count to 7,02,532, with 14,778 fatalities till now. The recovery rate has increased to 94 per cent with 855 being recovered and discharged across the city, taking the total recovery count to 6,57,301.

Dr Subhash Salunke, advisor to the Maharashtra government on Covid-19 management attributes the decrease in the number of deaths to various corrective measures taken over a period of time. “We are testing earlier. Patients with comorbidities are being sent to the hospitals and are not advised home quarantine. Today, we have far better knowledge of the mode of treatment, the medication required as well as post-Covid-19 protocols than before. All these factors combined have resulted in a decrease in the death rate,” he added.

Dr Avinash Supe, chairman of the state death audit committee, said, the number of deaths are higher in districts that have no medical college or have weak health infrastructure. “Oxygen shortage and infrastructure inadequacy which led to a rise in the number of deaths this year, especially in rural areas,” he said.
