CBI’s poll violence probe: TMC govt moves SC

The Trinamool Congress-led West Bengal government on Wednesday moved the Supreme Court against the Calcutta High Court’s verdict of CBI probe on West Bengal’s post-poll violence.

According to sources, the government had said before the court the CBI is being run by BJP-led Central government and through BJP’s instructio­n the CBI is slapping false cases on people.

Notably, on August 19 verdict the Calcutta High Court had ordered the murder of person or crime against women about rape or attempt to rape in the post-poll violence will be probed by CBI.

Talking to Free Press Journal, BJP advocate and petitioner Priyanka Tibrewal questioned the state government for taking the decision so late. “What prompted them to take a delayed decision? There are some defects in the petition of the state government and after they rectify them it will served to us as well and accordingl­y we will also proceed,” said Priyanka.

ED submits chargeshee­t on Narada bribery case

ED submitted its chargeshee­t in the Narada sting case in which TMC leaders Firhad Hakim, Madan Mitra, Subrata Mukherjee, former Kolkata Municipal Corporatio­n mayor Sovan Chatterjee and IPS officer SMH Mirza have been named. All have been summoned. The special court ordered issuance of summons to the ministers and leaders and the appearance of the accused on Nov 16. On MAY 14, 3 TMC MLAs Firhad Hakim, Subrata Mukherjee, Madan Mitra and one former TMC minister Sovan Chatterjee were arrested by the CBI officials.

Bypoll likely before the festive season

Chief Electoral Officer of all the states and chief secretarie­s met Election Commission of India (EC) through video-conference on Wednesday to speak about the situation of holding elections in different states.

According to West Bengal state secretaria­t sources, chief secretary HK Dwivedi claimed the situation was conducive in West Bengal to hold bypolls in the state before the festive season.

“Not just the chief secretary but even the chief electoral officer also gave an affirmatio­n to the claim of the state government and said the number of Covid cases is fewer in West Bengal. The EC had asked the state to be prepared for election,” said Nabanna sources.

They added there is a possibilit­y the bypoll be held before the festive season.

“Deputy Election Commission­er Sudeep Jain is likely to visit the state within seven days. The EC is likely to check the number of active cases with the NCMR along with the figures provided by the state,” said the sources.

Abhishek’s wife requests ED to quiz her in Kolkata

Despite being summoned by the ED over an alleged connection in a coal scam, Rujira Banerjee, wife of TMC national secretary Abhishek Banerjee refused to visit Delhi on Wednesday.

Citing pandemic situation, Rujira asked the ED to quiz her in Kolkata. “In this pandemic I cannot go to Delhi alone and I have 2 children. It would be convenient for me if you ask me to appear in Kolkata since your organisati­on has an office here also,” read the letter, mentioning Rujira would cooperate with the CBI.
