The Mumbra police have registered a murder case against a man for allegedly killing his 22-year-old wife. The police said he is on the run with his two-year-old daughter. The accused and the victim have been identified as Shahnawaz Yameen Saifi and Sadaf. The family resided at Burhani Building, Jeevan Baug, in Mumbra.

The incident took place in the wee hours of Wednesday. The complainant, Sameeruddin Shaikh, 47, father of the deceased, was trying to call his daughter that morning. The police said Shaikh tried to contact Shahnawaz after she didn’t take the call, but found his number switched off, too. Shaikh then contacted his sister who resides in the same locality. They reached the house to find Sadaf dead in a chair. “We suspect Shahnawaz killed her by giving her sedatives. He and his daughter are missing,” a police officer said.

The Mumbra police have registered an accidental report and started the investigation. On the complaint of Shaikh, a murder case was registered on Thursday. Shaikh claimed that the accused often assaulted his daughter and had arguments. The medical report states “opinions are reserved for chemical analysis reports and histopathology reports”.

A case under section 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered. “The reason is still unclear. We are in search of the accused,” said Madhukar Kad, senior police inspector, Mumbra police station.
