CHHATTISGARH CM’S FATHER HELD FOR CASTEIST SLUR ON BRAHMINS

- AVDHESH MALLICK Raipur

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel's father Nandkumar has been remanded to judicial custody for 14 days in a case stemming from his casteist utterances about the Brahmin community.

Baghel senior had refused to seek bail in the case. He was arrested in New Delhi and brought to Raipur on Tuesday, said a senior police officer. Acting on a written complaint filed by Sarv Brahmin Samaj, the D D Nagar police had registered an FIR against Nand Kumar Baghel under Sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc) and 505(1)(b) (with intent to cause hurt).

On his arrest, the BJP made scathing comments. ExMinister Rajesh Munat of the BJP alleged the drama was scripted to save his father the blushes, which would have happened if he was arrested in Uttar Pradesh. The arrest is part of vote bank politics to

create divisions in society.

BJP spokesperson Srichand Sundarani said the arrest was made under pressure from Sonia Gandhi with an eye on UP elections.

A day ago, while interacting with journalists at his official residence, Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel had made it clear that law will take its own course in the case. No one is above law.

However, before landing at Raipur, Nand Kumar Baghel stated that he had wilfully decided to get arrested and will fight his case up to

the Supreme Court. The fight against Brahmins has now entered the final phase, he added.
