Chennaiyin FC sign Indian midfielder Ninthoi

CHENNAI: Chennaiyin FC (CFC) have completed the signing of the young Indian attacking midfielder Ninthoi Meetei on a three-year deal, starting with the 2021-22 Indian Super League (ISL) season. The Imphal-born footballer was part of the Indian team that participat­ed in the FIFA U-17 World Cup hosted by India in 2017. In 2019, Ninthoi made headlines after winning the Best Player Award and guiding the Indian side to their maiden SAFF U-18 Championsh­ip title.

Mumbai City FC rope in Bradden Inman

MUMBAI: Reigning Indian Super League champions Mumbai City FC on Tuesday announced the signing of Australian midfielder Bradden Inman ahead of the upcoming season. The Australian midfielder joins the franchise on a season-long contract until May 2022. A product of English club Newcastle United's youth academy, Inman played his football for over 10 years in England, turning out for clubs like Crewe Alexandra, Peterborou­gh United, and Rochdale AFC.

Bopanna-Dodig pair goes down fighting

NEW YORK: Veteran Indian tennis player Rohan Bopanna and his Croatian partner Ivan Dodig fought their hearts out before losing their men's doubles third round to fourth seeds Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury at the US Open here. Bopanna and Dodig, seeded 13th, lost 7-6(4) 4-6 6-7(3) to the Australian Open runners-up in a gruelling contest that lasted two hours and 30 minutes on Monday night. With this defeat, India's challenge has ended at the last Grand Slam of the season.

Olympian player Vivek Sagar as DSP

BHOPAL: The Madhya Pradesh government has issued a letter appointing hockey player Vivek Sagar, who was part of the Indian squad that won the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics, as Deputy Superinten­dent of Police (DSP) in the state police, an official said on Tuesday. The appointmen­t letter was issued on Monday evening as promised by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and approved by the state cabinet, Additional Chief Secretary (ACS), Home, Rajesh Rajora said. Earlier this month, Chouhan had presented a cheque of Rs one crore to Sagar and announced his appointmen­t as DSP and a house for his family wherever they wish, in the state.

Tokyo Olympians to skip Nationals NEW DELHI:

The upcoming national men's boxing championsh­ip is unlikely to feature any of the five pugilists who competed at the Tokyo Olympics, ruling them out of contention for next month's world championsh­ips in Serbia as well. Amit Panghal (52kg), Manish Kaushik (63kg), Vikas Krishan (69kg), Ashish Chaudhary (75kg) and Satish Kumar (+91kg) had competed at the Tokyo Games. All of them lost in the preliminar­y rounds barring Satish, who went down in the quarters. Of these, Vikas, Satish and Ashish are nursing injuries and have withdrawn. There is no word yet on what Amit and Manish would do but a source said they might also skip the tournament due to "lack of practice time".

Baca's trip to Sevilla postponed

BARCELONA: High Council for Sports (CSD) has adjudicate­d in favour of the injunction requested by LaLiga to postpone the fixture between Sevilla and FC Barcelona set for Saturday. The game was set to start at 9 pm CEST in the Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium in Seville but will now be played at a later date, FC Barcelona confirmed on Tuesday. The request was made after the Spanish Football Federation's Competitio­n Committee came out against LaLiga wish for the fixtures between Sevilla and Barca and Villarreal and Alaves to be postponed.
