A Kalwa resident became the latest victim of cyber fraud after he was duped of Rs 6.50 lakh by an online crook. According to the police, the man was unable to get his mobile phone recharged offline, following which an online fraudster tricked him. The caller asks the complainant to download an app and transferred the amount through Paytm. The Kalwa police have registered a case and are investigating the matter.

The police said the complainant is identified as Sanjeev Kumar Ramchet Singh, 42, a resident of Parsik Nagar, Kalwa. Singh in his statement to police stated that on July 26, between 3:30 pm and 4:30 pm his father received a call on his mobile phone. "The unknown caller asked him to recharge for Rs 11 on his Jio number else his SIM card would be blocked. Singh then received a message in Hindi asking him to recharge his number with Rs 11 via a link i.e www.rechargecube. As the recharge was not processed, Singh gave a call to the fraudster. The caller then asked him to download an app, using which he transferred cash from Singh’s account to his account using the Paytm

app. A total of Rs 6.50 lakh was transferred from Singh’s account," said a police officer.

The police said Singh along with his son then gave a written complaint to the Kalwa police. After verifying the facts, a case was registered at Kalwa police station on September 11.

The Kalwa police have registered a case under section 420 of the Indian Penal Code and sections of the Information technology Act. "We have registered a case and have started gathering details. Usually such calls are made from fake numbers, which are purchased using duplicate documents. Then too we are verifying the mobile number and the bank account to which the cash is transferred to reach the accused," said a police officer from Kalwa police station.
