Incessant rains, overflowin­g rivers worsen C’garh situation

Rains batter Gujarat; over 200 people rescued

Incessant rains for last three days has worsened the condition in Chhattisga­rh. Rivers are flowing over the danger mark. Raipur district received average rainfall of 504.4 mm. Even in capital city Raipur, several posh colonies and low lying areas reported waterloggi­ng. The state meteorolog­ical department issued red alert in seven districts includes Mungeli, Kabirdham, Bemetara, Rajnandgar­on, Balod, Durg and Kanker. It also warned of heavy rains in Raipur.

Sources said, three districts Dhamtari, Gariaband and Jagdalpur have got disconnect­ed from Raipur.

Among other districts in the state, the situation in Gariaband worsened rapidly.

It forced the district collector to adjourn the district level meeting and go for supervisio­n.

Officials informed at many places on Gariaband-Raipur Highway, water is flowing above 2ft. Water entered the court complex in Rajim, Gariaband. The incessant rains and over flooded rivers forced the government to open 17 gates of Sikaser dam of Gariaband district and release 15,000 cusecs of water, which created flood like situation in nearby villages.

AHMEDABAD:

Heavy rains lashed Rajkot and Jamnagar in Gujarat over last 24 hours, following which over 200 people stranded in flood waters were rescued and over 7,000 people shifted to safer places, officials said.

A national highway in Jamnagar and 18 state highways passing through Rajkot, Jamnagar and Junagadh districts of the Saurashtra region were closed. A red alert was sounded as many parts of the state are expected to receive heavy to extremely heavy rains over next two to three days.
