Jabbed they MET!
With a smaller guest list and proof of vaccination made mandatory, the ‘party of the year’ is back with a bang
After a year of pandemic-induced hiatus, the Met Gala is back and how! After more than a year of virtual red carpets, the ultimate sartorial spectacle and fashion’s biggest night, paid tribute to the ingenuity of American style. The event, which was co-chaired by singer Billie Eilish, tennis pro Naomi Osaka, actor Timothée Chalamet and poet Amanda Gorman, was themed American independence, in keeping with the Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute’s annual exhibition, which is titled In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.
The theme lent itself to some very interesting (and even a few outlandish) interpretations -while, Lil Nas X pulled a Lady Gaga-esque strip tease on the carpet and described as his “coming out of his shell” over the past year, few guests also served their political agenda on the red carpet. Congresswoman Alexandria OcasioCortez turned up for her first Met Gala in a suffragette white gown with “Tax the Rich” painted on it. And she was not the only one making a political statement. Cara Delevingne had “Peg the Patriarchy” printed across her chest, while congresswoman Carolyn Maloney wore a gown in suffragette shades with “Equal rights for women” written on the trains falling from her shoulders. If this gala produced a trend, it is huge statement sleeves, with some stars and stripes thrown in. There was a smattering of red, as in the red, white and blue of the American flag. Karlie Kloss wore red Carolina Herrera with huge ruffles at the neck and sleeves. Jennifer Hudson also chose red sans sleeves. US women’s soccer star Megan Rapinoe made her MET Gala debut in a bright red silk Sergio Hudson pantsuit with a royal blue blouse emblazoned with white stars.
The evening had its share of what-the-heck moments, like a couple of horse heads on dresses and a green-haired
