The accused operated a fake recruitment agency; the victim had returned from Qatar and was looking for a job

The Manpada police in Dombivali have arrested three persons and detained a minor for allegedly killing a 48-year-old mechanical engineer. The police said the victim had returned from Qatar and was jobless. The accused pretended to offer an employment opportunity and called him to an isolated place to loot him. When he resisted, they assaulted and killed him.

The accused have been identified as Rehan Shaikh and his friends Sagar Konala and Sumit Sonawane. The detained minor and sent to an observation home. Shaikh, the police said, runs a fake recruitment agency for the purpose of looting prospective candidates.

The police said on September 11, at around 11 am, a traffic warden found a person lying in a pool of blood on the road near

Khambalpada near Dombivali East. He was rushed to the hospital, where he later died. “We found an Aadhaar card from his pocket. He was identified as Krishna Mohan Tiwari, a resident of Dombivali,” said a police officer.

Tiwari’s family was contacted and it was established that he had returned from Qatar to look for another job. A police official said Tiwari left his house telling his children that he had some work in Thakurli. His children revealed that Tiwari’s father was killed in Uttar Pradesh over a property matter. That angle, too, is being investigated. Meanwhile, the call data record of the deceased and accused has revealed that he using the SIM card belonging to someone else. The phone from which Tiwari received a call for a job is switched off, the officer said.

With technical help, the police team reached Rehan Shaikh, the person who had called Tiwari for recruitment. The official added, “Shaikh was working with a placement agency in Diva. He had data of people who were jobless during the pandemic. He used to call them with assurance of a job. When people came for interviews, Shaikh and his friends looted them.”
