TRAFFIC, POPULATION, OR STREET CRIME, WHAT IS MUMBAI'S BIGGEST PROBLEM?
I n Mumbai, street crime is at its worst, with chainsnatching on top. The police need to crack a whip on criminals and put them in jail. Women have been subjected to street crimes and there is a constant fear that one will be targetted sooner or later.— Neelima Rane

think Mumbai is facing traffic chaos, population woes and street crimes at every step. Though Mumbai has developed financially, we see lakhs of people stay on roadsides and earn their bread. Though many people have swanky cars, they can't enjoy a peaceful drive on the roads of Mumbai only because of uncontrolled traffic. And street crime has become a common factor for all Mumbaikars. Hope government will look into it as a priority and rid the common man of these.

hile street crime is fairly controlled in Mumbai due to the police presence, the bigger problems are traffic congestion and population. While the traffic scenario is likely to change a bit after all Metro lines are fully operational, the government should seriously come out with some policy as to how many vehicles a family can purchase. The population is a floating one as many people from nearby cities come to Mumbai for work, hence I don't know how this can be addressed.

opulation is the main factor, because of it Mumbai has gone out of control. Traffic is the second one and it directly connects to the population factor. Every day new construction goes on with no planning taken regarding infrastructure. Street crime is there but not as much compared to the other cities.

see only traffic as the major problem adding to pollution. A separate division to map and identify the bottlenecks should be made on priority by roping in private players. Commuters waste so much of fuel, time and energy only to travel by their vehicles. One should understand how restless commuters would be, especially those suffering from diabetes and other illnesses, who spend hours only in the traffic.
opulation is the biggest problem not only in Mumbai, but in the entire country. If the population will come under control, then problems such as traffic chaos and street crime will automatically get reduced. So, the government should focus on family planning. —Smita More
raffic has been a severe issue. Everywhere digging work is going on, even at those places where already other projects are pending. I am wondering how Mumbai citizens have been taken for granted. Traffic is just adding to the stress and further deteriorating our health. The carbon footprint is also adding to the problem. One says that with the Metro the carbon emission will be lower, but what about the current situation? — Amit Bagkar

recent study found that drivers in Mumbai spend 65% more time travelling because of the high traffic levels. And that’s both good and bad news. It’s good because it indicates a strong global economy, but the flip side is drivers wasting time sitting in traffic, not to mention the huge environmental impact and fuel, time wastage, most of the unfinished development projects, land disputes, political impasses, and red tapism.
