IN THE COURTYARD CJI: Wait 2 days to list hijab cases

The Supreme Court on Tuesday agreed to list pleas challengin­g the Karnataka High Court verdict against wearing of Hijab, with CJI NV Ramana stating 'wait for two days' to tackle the problem in his home state.

The issue was mentioned by senior advocate Meenaksi Arora, appearing for one of the petitioner­s, seeking an urgent hearing before a Bench that also constitute­d Justices Krishna Murari and Hima Kohli.

Several petitions are filed in the apex court against the Karnataka High Court

Will look into judiciary infra issue: Centre to SC NEW DELHI:

The Centre on Tuesday told the Supreme Court that issues such as lack of proper infrastruc­ture to cater to growing need of the judiciary and the bar in the national capital can be looked into in consultati­on with the apex court registry. A bench comprising Justice Vineet Saran and JK Maheshwari termed as "horrible" the crowd situation in the apex court corridor, and said something can be done by the central government.

Kiran Bedi to monitor Virender Dev Dixit's ashram NEW DELHI:

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday formed a committee under the supervisio­n of retired IPS officer Kiran Bedi to monitor the welfare and protection of rights of women living in an ashram founded by self-styled spiritual preacher Virender Dev Dixit. A bench headed by Acting Chief Justice Vipin Sanghi was hearing pleas concerning the state of affairs at the Adhyatmik Vidhyalaya in Rohini.

Azam Khan's bail plea hearing off to Friday NEW DELHI:

The Supreme Court on Tuesday deferred hearing of interim bail plea of Samajwadi Party leader and Rampur MLA Azam Khan languishin­g in jail since February 2020 to Friday, after his senior advocate Kapil Sibal insisted on the hearing since the lower court has kept the bail verdict pending for a long time. Sibal said there are 87 FIRs registered against Azam Khan, a former UP minister, and four cases are going on, including two in which he was granted bail. Allahabad High Court had reserved its verdict on his bail plea since Dec 4. —Our Bureau

Jignesh Mevani remanded to 5-day police custody BARPETA:

Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani was remanded to five days of police custody by a local court in the Barpeta district of Assam on Tuesday in connection with an assault case. verdict holding that wearing of hijab is not part of essential religious practice.

The high court had dismissed the petitions filed by a section of Muslim students from the Government Pre-University Girls College in Udupi, seeking permission to wear hijab inside the classroom.

Earlier on Monday, Mevani was re-arrested by Barpeta Police for assaulting a policewoma­n, soon after he was granted bail in the matter connected to his tweets about Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Delhi High Court has restrained the schools of Sanjay Gandhi Educationa­l Society from using the name 'The British School', a name belonging to a notable education institute in the national capital while dealing with a trademark infringeme­nt suit.

Delhi police opposes Umar Khalid bail plea NEW DELHI:

The Delhi Police on Tuesday filed its reply copy in Delhi High Court opposing Umar Khalid's appeal challengin­g the trial court order refusing bail. Reply said the trial court rightly dismissed the bail applicatio­n of the Appellant.

Andhra HC takes cognisance of theft at Nellore court AMARAVATI:

The Andhra Pradesh High Court has taken suo motu note of the incident of theft at a court in Nellore in which material relating to a case involving a state minister was stolen. The Advocate General conveyed to the High Court that the government has no objection to handing over the case to CBI. Documents and items relating to forgery and defamation case involving Agricultur­e Minister were stolen on April 14.

2,95,601 complaints under domestic violence act: Centre NEW DELHI:

The Centre has informed the Supreme Court that as per informatio­n received from states and Union Territorie­s, a total of 2,95,601 complaints have been registered under Protection of Women from Domestic Violence (PWDV) Act, and there are 3,637 protection officers in the country.
