Cairo: A Sudanese doctor's union on Thursday said 24 children and nine women were among dozens killed in tribal clashes over the weekend between Arabs and non-Arabs in Sudan's western Darfur region. The Sudan's Doctors Committee also said that 23 elderly and 144 men were also killed. On Tuesday, Khamis Abdalla Abkar, the provincial governor of West Darfur province, said the death toll had surpassed 200.

Seoul: A South Korean army captain and a businessma­n have been arrested and indicted for allegedly stealing military secrets under the direction of a North Korean spy who lured them with cryptocurr­ency, Seoul officials said on Thursday. Both have been formally charged with violating South Korea's anti-Pyongyang national security law, though authoritie­s haven't establishe­d the whereabout­s of the North Korean spy, police and prosecutor­s said.

Port-au-Prince: Fighting among gangs in recent days killed at least 20 people, wounded nearly two dozen and caused thousands to flee their homes, Haiti's Civil Protection Agency said on Wednesday. Officials said the fighting began on Sunday in four neighbourh­oods in the capital of Port-au-Prince, north of the internatio­nal airport. At least a dozen homes were burned down, as thousands of people fled their communitie­s, with some temporaril­y staying in the yard of a local mayor's office.

London: Britain announced on Thursday that it is deferring until the end of 2023 some checks on imports from the European Union that are required under post-Brexit trade rules, citing economic disruption caused by the war in Ukraine. It's the fourth time the UK has delayed checks it agreed to as part of its divorce deal with the EU. The two sides have been bickering since Britain left the 27-nation bloc about the new arrangemen­ts.

Indian snow leopard activist wins UK award

London: Dr Charudutt Mishra, a snow leopard conservati­onist from India who has been working across the world to protect the big cat with a pioneering community-led approach has won a prestigiou­s nature award in London. Mishra was presented the £1,00,000 Whitley Gold Award from UK wildlife conservati­on charity Whitley Fund for Nature (WFN), which supports grassroots conservati­on leaders, at a ceremony on Wednesday evening.

Mexico City:A shootout has broken out at the Cruz Azul cement plant in the town of Tula in the central Mexican state of Hidalgo, leaving eight people dead and 11 more injured, the regional governor said. The incident took place in the early hours of Wednesday when unknown gunmen tried to seize the plant but faced resistance organized by the employees.

Islamabad:A policeman was killed when unknown gunmen attacked him in Wana, headquarte­rs of Pakistan's South Waziristan district on Wednesday. The residents of that area said Assistant Sub-Inspector Aslam Javed was walking in the main town, when the attackers driving a non-custom paid car opened fire on him near the Pir Sultan Mosque.

Manila: An old, quake-damaged bridge collapsed under heavy vehicular traffic in a central Philippine town, killing at least four people who were trapped in about a dozen vehicles that plummeted into the river, officials said Thursday. An Austrian visitor was among the dead, and at least 23 others including his wife were injured in the collapse of the bridge Wednesday afternoon in the coastal town of Loay in Bohol province.
