Biker mowed down in SoBo; teacher held
According to locals who witnessed the accident, they pointed out that the mistake was on part of the car driver as he had entered the no-entry lane
A 28-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly driving into a no entry lane and subsequently killing a biker near DN Road in south Mumbai, said the Azad Maidan Police.
The fatal mishap occurred on May 1 when the accused, a teacher by profession, rammed his car into the bike of a 23-yearold deceased.
According to police sources, the incident occurred on the evening of May 1 when the deceased, Nikhil Suryavanshi, a Colaba resident, was on his way back home, when his motorcycle was hit by a four-wheeler coming in the no entry lane near Hotel Kandeel on the DN Road.
Soon after the accident, Suryavanshi fell off the bike.
The driver of the car, Maulik Modi, a Kandivali resident, immediately rushed for Suryavanshi's help and took him to the GT Hospital.
Meanwhile, a call was made to the police control room, after which the cops reached the accident spot. The locals informed police that Modi had entered the no-entry lane despite a board being put up for motorists.
The police team then reached the GT Hospital and took custody of Modi for questioning, while Suryavanshi was recuperating.
Late night on May 1, however, the latter succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead.
Subsequently, Modi was booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicles Act for causing death due to negligence and rash driving.He was arrested by the Azad Maidan Police and produced before a local magistrate court.
