- SIDDHARTHA Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, Motherhood Hospital Kharghar

Are you pregnant? Have you been diagnosed with asthma? Then, you need to take extra care of yourself as asthma can be problematic for you and your baby. In the below article, we help you to know about the serious complications that can arise due to uncontrolled asthma.

Asthma is a chronic lung condition that leads to inflammation of the airways. A lot of pregnant women are prone to asthma. The cardio-respiratory system is impacted during pregnancy due to the anatomic and physiologic variations that are seen in the body. Owing to high mucous secretion, one’s upper airway gets congested and there is nasal obstruction, and occasionally epistaxis. During the third trimester, changes are seen in the pregnant woman’s pre-existing disease. Keeping asthma under control will be a good idea. Unmanaged asthma during pregnancy can take a toll on both, the mother and the baby’s health.

Uncontrolled asthma can invite a fatal condition called preeclampsia, after the 20th week or right after pregnancy. This condition is characterized by high blood pressure and organs, like kidneys and liver, may fail to function at their optimum level. The worrisome signs of this condition are high protein content in the urine, changes in vision, and severe headaches.

Inability to control asthma can lead to a low oxygen supply to the baby. Thus, there can be a higher risk of premature birth, restricted growth and development of the baby, and even low weight at birth. Premature babies can have long-term health complications or disabilities. The pregnant woman with asthma may also require a cesarean (C-section) delivery.
