Turkey annual inflation hits nearly 70% Tornadoes strike Texas, Oklahoma; more in offing

ANKARA: Turkey's annual inflation jumped to 69.97% in April, reaching a two-decade high, the Turkish Statistica­l Institute announced Thursday. The country's consumer prices rose 7.25 per cent month on month in April, according to data released by the institute. The highest annual price surge was in the transporta­tion sector with 105.86%. The cost of food and nonalcohol­ic drinks increased 89.1 per cent, while furnishing­s and household equipment prices were up 77.64 per cent.

SEMINOLE: A springtime storm system spawned several tornadoes that whipped through areas of Texas and Oklahoma, causing damage to a school, a marijuana farm and other structures. There were no reports of serious injuries following the Wednesday night tornadoes, but the system was causing flooding in parts of Oklahoma and Arkansas and more stormy weather was expected Thursday. Significan­t damage was reported in the Oklahoma city of Seminole, about 60 miles (97 kilometers) southeast of Oklahoma City, the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management said.

2 dead, 1 hurt in Southern California shooting

CALIFORNIA: Two people were killed and another was injured on Wednesday after a shooting near a private university in Southern California, local media reported, citing police. Investigat­ors said that the bloodshed happened around 2:15 am local time on the 11000 block of Pierce Street in the City of Riverside where officers found two people with gunshot wounds after reports of a shooting in the area near La Sierra University, reported KABC-TV, the West Coast flagship station of the ABC television network. One person died at the scene. The other was sent to the hospital.

S Korean spy agency joins NATO cyber defence group

SEOUL: South Korea's state intelligen­ce agency on Thursday said it has joined a cyber defence group under the NATO as the first Asian member. The National Intelligen­ce Service (NIS) was formally admitted into the NATO Cooperativ­e Cyber Defence Center of Excellence (CCDCOE) based in Tallinn, Estonia, the same day and will represent South Korea in the centre's training and research activities, reported Yonhap News Agency. The centre was establishe­d in 2008 in response to a Russian cyberattac­k that crippled Estonia's state networks.

6.0 magnitude quake rocks Philippine­s

MANILA: An earthquake of magnitude 6.0 on the Richter scale hit Philippine Islands on Thursday, the National Center for Seismology (NCS) confirmed. "Earthquake of Magnitude:6.0, Occurred on 05-05-2022, 13:51:19 IST, Lat: 6.55 & Long: 127.11, Depth: 20 Km ,Location: Philippine Islands," NCS tweeted. Earlier, the Philippine Institute of Volcanolog­y and Seismology said that a magnitude of 5.7 jolted Davao Oriental province in the southern Philippine­s.

China building collapse: Death toll now at 26

BEIJING: The death toll has risen to 26 in the collapse of a building in central China. The official Xinhua News Agency says that 10 people had also been rescued as of Thursday night. Rescuers have been searching through the rubble since the building in the city of Changsha collapsed last Friday. The announceme­nt came after the 10th survivor was rescued early Thursday, almost six days after the collapse.

Pak witness 24% spike in militant attacks in April

ISLAMABAD: The number of militant attacks in Pakistan increased by 24 per cent in April, but deaths and injuries decreased by 53 per cent as compared to March this year, an Islamabad based think-tank said. Last month, the militants carried out 34 attacks, in which 55 people were killed, including 34 security force personnel, 13 civilians and eight militants, according to figures released by Islamabad-based think-tank Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS).
