The installation of over 1,600 high-end CCTV cameras across Navi Mumbai are being inspected for lacunae or operational problems. Civic chief Abhijit Bangar has directed the electrical department to expedite the work, for which the contract was awarded to Tata Advanced Systems Ltd in FebruaryMarch this year.

In 2012, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) had installed 282 cameras at major locations to help solve various crimes as well as find out the cause and effect of accidents. For greater self-reliance in security, the NMMC is now installing 1,608 cameras based on the latest technology. Bangar reviewed the work on Friday and directed that the procurement of necessary equipment should be completed within the stipulated time. Meanwhile, Tata Advanced Systems Ltd has completed the survey of sites and is waiting for approval from the police to start the installation; the electrical engineering department will coordinate with the police for approvals. The police have also suggested a few key locations for installation.

As per the NMMC, the new CCTV cameras will be used for vehicle number plate detection and traffic signal violations. The commissioner also wants speed violations captured.

3The cameras will be fully automated and work in realtime. A special integrated command care centre is being set up at the NMMC headquarters in coordination with the disaster management department. Bangar has directed the engineering department to include features like smart parking, SCADA, and solid waste management systems in the near future.
