What goes into the making of a self-portrait? This question forms the crux of artist Ashik Ja›er-Ali’s workshop,

Identity. Ashik will encourage participants to explore the works of established artists from around the world.

“I will introduce four to “ve artists to children and talk about where they are from, and the techniques they use,” says Ashik, adding that they will be o›ered exercises to do based on what they have learned. “By the end of the class, they will be able to understand the artist and their work,” she says. For the workshop, she has picked artists who are known for self-portraits, such as Frida Kahlo. Participants will also be taught concepts such as surrealism, and will be able to apply such knowledge in their work.

She is also hosting another workshop in which children will be taught to build their own stools using a carpentry kit. “They will be able to understand basic wood working, and will paint their own stools too, so each one will be unique.”

Identity (for children aged seven to 11) is on from April 29 to May 3, 3pm to 5.30pm, at The Little Gym, Bharathi Colony Road. Build Your Own Stool (for children aged over eight) is on April 25, 3pm to 5.30pm at The Little Furnette, Sungam Bypass Road. Call 9500927790.
