Water supply scheme in Chennimalai union nearing completion
The scheme, aimed at supplying water to 28,640 households through 266 service reservoirs, commenced in March 2023 and is slated for completion by September 2024
With the majority of the work under the ₹482.36 crore Combined Water Supply Scheme (CWSS) for 434 rural habitations across 22 village panchayats in the Chennimalai union nearing completion, distribution of water is expected to begin soon.
The scheme, implemented by the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD), intends to draw water from the River Cauvery in the Muthugoundanpalayam panchayat of Modakkurichi union. The untreated water is then conveyed to the 12.11 million litres per day (MLD) treatment plant located at Vellamuthu Goundan Valasu. After treatment, the water is transported through a feeder main spanning 618.39 kilometres to reach the 266 service reservoirs that supply water to 28,640 households. The project, which commenced in March 2023, is slated for completion by September 2024.
On Wednesday, Mageswari Ravikumar, Additional Secretary of the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department, inspected the scheme’s progress at various sites. She surveyed the raw water pumping well at the river, where trial runs to pump water using generators commenced on January 31, 2024.
Ms. Mageswari instructed TWAD Board ocials to obtain power connections and switch to electric motors at the earliest.
The School Education Department Secretary and Namakkal District Monitoring Ocer, J. Kumaragurubaran, conducted an inspection of school buses in the district on Thursday. The Secretary was accompanied by District Collector S. Uma during the inspection at the Namakkal Armed Reserve Ground.
The inspection was carried out after the state government instructed ocials to assess the tness of school buses before the commencement of the academic year under the supervision of the district-level interdepartmental committee. A total of 622 school buses, falling within the jurisdiction of the Namakkal North Regional Transport Oce (270 buses) and the Namakkal South RTO Oce (352 buses), were inspected.
A demonstration was held for school bus drivers and others in charge on emergency protocols. Subsequently, drivers underwent eye and physical examinations.
Mr. Kumaragurubaran later surveyed ongoing scheme works, including the construction of a ration shop worth ₹9.76 lakh in Velagoundampatti, a motor room costing ₹27.60 lakh in Marukalampatti, new classrooms valued at ₹63.54 lakh in Kumaramangalam Government High School, and additional classrooms costing ₹42.72 lakh in Tiruchengode Government Boys Higher Secondary School.
