The Ideal Home and Garden

Art for you is?

-

An escape from reality. As the creator of sculptures, I am chasing that high that comes with getting something just right; be it the shape of a horse’s eye or the twist of an owl’s head.

What prompted you to work with steel?

I was fascinated with the look of the objects I found on the ranch I grew up on. There were piles of material to work. So, material was readily available. Mild steel is relatively easy to work with. It is the cast iron pieces and other pot metals that are difficult. But if a piece of metal is cool enough and I really must include it into my sculpture, I will find a way.

Any inspiring words for young artists looking forward to working with steel?

Go for it! It is a lot easier than you think. Wear a respirator on your face, so you don’t breath in all the toxic fumes from welding.
