Expert insights on kids decor

Decorating a kids room is like chasing a moving target. As they keep growing and discovering new interests and hobbies, their room should be able to withstand plenteous wear and tear more than any other room in the house. “For children, their room is like their world. They can simply crash on the bed, paint all over, play with their friends or just relax. It has to be a reflection of their personality otherwise they will fail to build a connection with the space,” states Parul Mittal, Director-Design & Marketing, Greenlam. Whether you are planning to design a room for an infant or refurbishing the space of a growing kid to fit its changing needs, we have brought you some really smart ideas that will help you build your child’s own private sanctuary.

Wall to Wall

It comes as no surprise that most of us believe a kid’s room should have ample amount of colour. Whereas neutrals score up to be a popular choice for kid’s space these days, as the palette manages to create a soothing environment without being harsh or overwhelming. “Consult your children when choosing colours for your home and especially for their room, as they will feel involved in the process, giving them a sense of independence. Softer tones such as lemon, lime, and orange are cheerful and childlike, yet easily evolve to accommodate teen years by simply swapping accessories,” suggests Ram Mehrotra, VP-Sales and Marketing, Kansai Nerolac. When it comes to decorating walls the options do not limit only to wall paints. If you are a fan of wallpapers, we suggest a wall clad with wallpaper will bring in just the right amount of vibrance.

While chalk board wall paints will surely bring out the creative heart and mind of your kid. Talking about another innovative idea from the house of Greenlam, Parul shares, “Our range of printed laminates for walls will definitely solve many wall décor problems. These laminates are customisable and can be easily pasted on a substrate resting on your wall as a statement panel. Once your child is bored of the theme, you can get these removed and go ahead with a new theme.”

Decorama

With simple and classic colours on walls, you can choose decorative elements in vibrant hues and vivid patterns to raise the fun quotient. Accessories, decorative pieces and furnishings give you many ways to play with the space without even worrying about the future changes. Reigning the world of quirky accessories, Shubbra Chadda, Co-founder, Chumbak suggests, “For kids room, use of bright colours for accessories that maintain a sense of happiness and incorporation of animal motifs are a great trend to follow.” With kids it could be entirely theme

based or it could be totally random, everything depending on their current favourite superhero, movie or sports. Working on an infant’s room might seem a little tricky, therefore accessories and furnishings in aqua, corals and green work best. As these colours are forever, they also help in building a warm and welcoming ambiance. Director of Peek-a-boo Patterns, Garima Agarwal believes, “Furnishings that reflect the character and personality of the child should be used throughout the area. You can add splashes of colours in your kid’s bathroom too with vivid basin counter sets, fun soap dispensers, quirky tooth brush holder, a bath mat and a printed shower curtain.”

Furniture Frenzy

A kid’s room serves as a multi-fuctional play and sleep zone, so it has to be designed in such a way that it allows them to be super active as well as super comfortable. “Choosing the right kind of furniture for kid’s space will help your child to have a relaxed living after a tiring day at school. One should go for multi-functional pieces for this room that will help the child to enjoy that extra space. Be very careful in choosing the colour of the furniture as it should also balance the dècor as well as reveal your kid’s individuality. Instead of going over the board and choosing darker and vibrant colours, it is advisable to go for subtle and happy shades,” shares Ashish Gupta, Director, InLiving. Plan for well designed open and closed storage to keep toys, books, board games, art supplies and save top shelves for items that require adult supervision. Ritika Dhingra, Design Lead, Urban Ladder recommends, “One can opt colourful open wall shelves in their kid’s room that not only provide extra storage, but also add to the fun appeal of the room.”

Floor it All

Flooring contributes immensly towards defining a kid’s room. The kind of flooring you choose will have a great impact on the complete ambiance of the room. Due to warm and comfortable nature, wood remains a popular choice for this room. It is safe, stain resistant and highly durable as wood keeps maturing with time. If you are looking for something more lively than a classic wooden floor, snippets of colourful mosiac tiles or digitally printed tiles can eliven the space. It is also advisable not to go over the top with too many colours as the floor take away the room’s mood. With the increasing popularity and comfortable designs, you can opt for carpets and rugs with kid-friendly designs and patterns. You can opt for lighter shades like cool blue, white, peach, light yellow, etc to uplift the mood.
