The Ideal Home and Garden - - Contents -

Growing up in a colonial house built for Germans, I still remember the spacious rooms and huge verandah where I have memories of playing many games with my younger sister. Strangely, the main entrance of the house used to open up to a kitchen-cum-casual dining space, to the left was living space and to the right was private areas. I invariably remember our kitchen, which was better than any other room. For me, it was the first room of our home where I have helped my mum cook by relishing her recipes. Though the allure of the kitchen obviously has a lot to do with food, but growing up, it was also the place where mum could usually be found. My mum’s kitchen was very creative not only in its aesthetics, but also in the tools that she used to cook.

According to a survey, kitchen design is one of the biggest considerations while designing a house and homeowners are prepared to spend decent amount on this space too. Well, I am surely not surprised. This space is actually a bonding area that not only ties your home together, it ties your loved ones together. So, as the kitchen continues to develop and this space is one to be treasured whatever it’s size and if you are still struggling with the decor, here we are!

The team’s effort on making the ‘used to be utilitarian space’, the hub of home will amaze you in many ways. If you are thinking about updating your kitchen this year, check out the hot trends, as identified by designers and industry experts on (Pg 78). Now, get decorating! Playing with neutrals is a timeless choice, but adding extra touches can uplift the mood of the space. From walls to floor, tiles to paint, faucets to sinks, and cabinets to furniture, all play an important role in adding happy hues to this space. The feature Cover Focus (Pg 70) suggests working with cohesive palette and materials to achieve a sense of balance with adjacent spaces. Once you are done with the job, you need a relaxing holiday to a spectacular destination. How about a disconnect from urban life and a lovely stay on water? Check out Pg 118 to explore more...
