The Ideal Home and Garden

TAP THE TREND

Our homes now are multi-purpose spaces rather than being just places to live in. This is the time we explore the in-trend colours, textures and patterns that can add character to our more-than-just-ahome space.

Kanak Nanda gives us her insightful opinion about colours, patterns and textures in trend for 2021.

Isolated in homes for an unexpected amount of time, we have realised that home isn’t just a place to live any more – it’s an office, a gym, an entertainment center, a classroom, and more – and we have started to create homes that reflect this. Painting a wall or adding some patterns or textures to our living space can instantly change their entire look and feel. The year 2021 is all about bright colours, loud patterns, bold textures and an increased desire to repair, re-purpose and recycle.

Bright happy colours

Colour is the most important aspect of any space, saturated and juicy colours paired with much paler hues in the background make the intense colours pop and create a refreshing and happy space. Raspberry red, bright yellow and aqua blue are some accent colors which instantly uplift the mood and create an optimistic vibe for any space. Nature inspired colours like dusky pinks, mushroom browns, sage green and terracotta are the new neutrals which balance the brighter shades.

Maximalist patterns

Patterns are getting bigger and bolder, going from minimalist to maximalist. Mix classic designs such as stripes with florals or animal prints with exotic styles such as ikat, chinoiserie, kilim and bold graphic lines. Customised wall murals like a scenery or a beach or a memory from a particular holiday have been some of the most popular themes for a wall, since we haven’t been able to travel.

Textured walls

Textured walls help bring depth, dimension and mood to a space. If you have a smaller space, adding texture to your walls makes the room look larger and uncrowded. Using faux finishes like Marmarino, limewash or marble stucco creates a dimensional layer without feeling like there is too much of colour. Dramatic textures inspired by animal skin, botanicals, woven materials like jute, linen, etc are some of the ways to bring nature’s organic textures indoor.
