Had his first solo at the Bombay Art Society Salon and awarded the Silver Medal by the Society

Co-founded the Bombay Progressive Artists’ Group.

1950-53:

Moved to Paris to study at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-arts. He continued to live and exhibit his work there

Awarded the Prix de la critique in Paris, the first nonfrench artist to receive the honour

Awarded the Padma Bhushan

Moved back to India.

Awarded the Padma Vibhushan

Received Commandeur de la Legion d’honneur by the Government of France

His last exhibition was held in Delhi (Vadehra Art Gallery) from January 15 to February 24, 2016.
