Opp MLAS evicted from UP Assembly after protests
PANDEMONIUM PREVAILED in the UP assembly on the second day of the monsoon session on Tuesday as Opposition MLAS sought to corner the SP government over a wide range of issues, from sugarcane dues and Bulandshahr gangrape to alleged atrocities against Dalits and Muslims. Speaker Mata Prasad Pandey later asked marshals to evict the protesting legislators.
BSP, BJP, RLD and Apna Dal members trooped into the well of the House with placards and banners even before the proceedings began. BSP members donned caps with slogans like “Daliton par atyachar nahi chalega (atrocities against Dalits won’t be tolerated)”. BJP legislators raised the issues of law and order and security of women, while RLD members raised the issue of sugarcane dues of farmers.
As the Speaker’s attempt to pacify the members went in vain, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Azam Khan asked him to take strict action against the sloganeering legislators, who he accused of contempt of the House for creating ruckus even before the start of the proceedings.
On his demand, a resolution was passed with voice vote to remove the agitating legislators following which the Speaker asked the marshals to evict them.
The Speaker said he was forced to take strict action. “It was a strict decision but necessary. Both BSP and BJP are competing with each other in creating nuisance for cheap publicity,” Khan added.
