4 arrested for Mewat rape, murders: Police

FOUR PEOPLE have been arrested in connection with the robbery, double murder and gangrape of two families in Mewat district’s Dingerheri village last week, said police Sunday.

On Wednesday night, a group of robbers terrorised the two families in the village, who lived within 200 meters of each other. The assailants allegedly murdered a couple and raped a minor girl and her married cousin.twomorefam­ilymembers received injuries after they were beaten up with “thick, wooden sticks”, said police.

According to police, the accused have been identified as Sandeep, Amarjeet, Karamjeet and Rahul. All four live in Mohammadpu­r Ahir village, which is less than 3 km away from Dingerheri. The accused are between 20 and 28 years of age and have “no stable employment as such”, said police.

Explaining the line of investigat­ion that led to the arrest of the men, IGP (south range) Mamta Singh said, “From the start, we were probing two angles as part of our investigat­ion. Thefirstwa­stheinvolv­ementof criminal tribes and the second was the involvemen­t of locals.”

Singhsaido­neofthevic­tims had spotted the four accused near the Kundli-manesarpal­wal (KMP) Expressway, which lies adjacent to Dingerheri village, multiple times in the days preceding the crime. “Local intelligen­ce also revealed that the accused were spotted in the area several times,” said Singh.

Police said they were tracked down by the special investigat­ion team, formed on Thursday to probe the incident, and were summoned to the women’s police station in Mewat Sunday afternoon.

“Based on evidence recovered (from the crime scene) and the statement of the victims, we summoned the four persons to the police station. On questionin­g, we found sufficient evidence to arrest them,” said Singh.
