TENSION GRIPPED a village in Mathura after a 14-year-old girl was allegedly raped by two men from another community late Tuesday night.

The accused have been identified as Yunus (35) and Anees (35). While Anees, who works in a slaughterhouse, escaped, Yunus, a wrestler, was caught by the villagers, police said.

The victim’s mother said she and other family members were sleeping on the terrace while her husband was out. The victim was watching TV in the room. On hearing a knock, the girl opened the door. It was then that the accused allegedly grabbed her, took her to an empty plot and raped her. “On hearing the knock, I thought my husband had returned. It was only after my daughter screamed for help that the neighbours woke up and caught Yunus,” the mother said.

The locals assaulted Yunus and held him captive in a hut overnight. “The villagers wanted to torch the hut. But a police team arrived in the morning and pacified them. Later, Yunus was handed over to police,” said village head Chandrapal Singh Kuntal.

“An FIR has been lodged under POCSO Act and relevant IPC sections. Search is on for Anees,” said SP (Rural) Arun Kumar.
