THE MADHYA Pradesh police inspector who weighs 180kg and was the subject of social media taunts will undergo stomach-resizing bariatric surgery on Thursday.

Inspector Daulataram Jogawat’s procedure will be conducted at Saifee Hospital in Mumbai by Dr Muffazal Lakdawala, a bariatric surgeon and chairman oftheinstituteofminimalaccess Surgical Sciences & Research Centre at the hospital.

The inspector reached Mumbai from Madhya Pradesh on February 26 for check-ups and agreed to undergo the surgery after his family consented to it.

Neemuch SP Manoj Kumar Singh said the police officer may have been “a little scared of the media reaction”.

Lakdawala said Jogawat’s “body mass index is 24 times than what it should be. There are a few issues but nothing major for the operation to go ahead.”

Writer Shobha De had tweeted Jogawat’s picture to mock Mumbai police’s “heavy bandobast” during last week’s municipal elections, suggesting the force needed to be healthier.

The Mumbai police pointed out that the man in the picture was not one of their own. Others noticed that the photo had been in circulation for the past three years, used every time to make a point about overweight policemen.

The trail led to the door of 57year-old Jogawat, posted in Police Lines at Neemuch in MP.

Doctors said the inspector is expected to lose at least 80 kg in the next 18 months without having to maintain any diet.

Neemuch SP Singh said, “Jogawat is diabetic and sounded normal when I spoke to him. He probably agreed to the surgery because he is a little scared of the media reaction,” Singh said.

On the expenses of the treatment,“wewillpayforthesurgery if the hospital sends the bill to us. We will check the rules before makingthepayment,”singhsaid.
