IN A shooting spree in broad daylight atop a flyover in Northeast Delhi, a 44-year-old man allegedly gunned down a Delhi Police assistant sub-inspector and injured a passerby — before turning the weapon on himself. The motive? A dispute over money, said police.

DCP (Northeast) Joy Tirkey said police received a PCR call at 11.42 am about two people sustaining injuries in a firing incident on Meet Nagar flyover. He said ASI Dinesh Sharma, posted in the Special Branch, was on his motorcycle while the second person, Amit Kumar, 30, was driving his scooter at the time.

According to police sources, the ASI was shot point-blank in the chest by the accused, Mukesh, while a stray bullet hit Amit. They were rushed to GTB Hospital where the policeman was declared dead on arrival; Amit sustained bullet injuries to his waist.

“After the shooting, the accused got into an autorickshaw but the driver, Mehmood, 35, protested. The accused fired at him too, but the latter jumped out and escaped without injury... After that, it appears Mukesh shot himself (dead). We found two bullet wounds to his head,” said the DCP.

Tirkey said the ASI and Mukesh knew each other well:

“It seems Mukesh had taken some money from Sharma and a dispute had broken out between them over Mukesh returning the money.”

A Nand Nagri JJ cluster resident, Mukesh had been working as a safai karamchari in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for the last 20 years in Block D3 area. His, family, meanwhile, is unable to comprehend why he took such a step. “Mukesh was a good man; he never drank nor took drugs... he had no mental health issues,” said his elder brother, Sudesh.

They, however, were unaware of his association with Kumar. “We didn’t even know about this man until today, we didn’t know how he knew him or for how long, let alone how much money he owed my father,” said Pankaj, his son.

Meanwhile, Amit’s family said the injury has left him paralysed waist down as the bullet is lodged near his spinal cord. A resident of Karawal Nagar, he works as a lift maintenance engineer.

“He was coming back from work when he was shot. The gunman wanted to shoot someone else but Amit got shot instead,” said Vinit Kumar, his elder brother. Amit was later taken to AIIMS for further treatment.

Police sources said a 7.65 mm pistol was found on there ar seat of the auto while multiple live rounds and empty shells were found at three spot son the fly over.

The DCP said a case under the IPC section of murder and sections of the Arms Act has been lodged against Mukesh.
