Cab driver murder: Cops on lookout for suspect with a limp

A DAY after a 36-year-old taxi driver was killed allegedly by three unidentified assailants near Red Fort, footage from a CCTV camera that captured the incident has provided police a clue to help identify one of them — a man with a limp.

Officers privy to the probe suspect that the three accused may have been involved in criminal activity in the past as the scooter on which one of the three came had a fake number plate. Police said the victim’s phone and wallet were missing.

The victim, Shakib, was on his way back home on Monday night when his car hit an e-rickshaw. This sparked a quarrel between the deceased and three passersby, which then escalated — Shakib was dragged out of his Wagonr, assaulted and stabbed, before being shot dead.

CCTV footage showed that one of the accused was on a scooter along with a woman and a child while the other two were on foot.

A senior police officer told The Indian Express ,“Oneoftheaccused persons had a limp in his right leg... it is not clear if he already had a limp or if it was due to an injury sustained during the scuffle. We have formed multipleteamstonabtheaccused...we suspect a robbery angle as the victim’s phone and wallet are missing... the phone has also been unreachable since the incident. However, no official robbery complaint has been lodged by the deceased’s family so far.”

Another officer said to track down the suspects, homeless people around Red Fort are being questioned as it is suspected that the assailants have committed similar crimes like snatching and thefts in the area.

“... Further, CCTV camera trail was scanned and it showed one of the accused driving away on the scooter towards New Delhi Railway Station,” said another officer.

“We also found that the scooter had a fake number plate and its details are being tracked... the woman (seen in the footage) is also on our suspect list,” he added.
