TN Youtuber held for ‘defamatory remarks’ about policewomen
YOUTUBER AND suspended Tamil Nadu government employee A Shankar, popularly known as ‘Savukku Shankar, was arrested in the early hours of Saturday by the Cybercrime Wing of the Coimbatore Police over certain derogatory remarks he made against women police personnel in a recent Youtube interview.
The complaint was lodged by Sub-inspector Sukanya of the Crime Branch Wing, Coimbatore police.
The arrest comes amid a controversy surrounding Shankar’s criticism of political figures and law enforcement agencies in tamil na du. a senior officer handling his arrest and further judicial proceedings said charges imposed on shank ar include offence sun der Sections 294(b), 509, and 353 of the
Indian Penal Code, along with Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Woman Act and Section 67 of the Information technology act ,2000.
The arrest was not without its share of drama. Shankar was picked up by police from Theni and while being escorted to Coimbatore, the vehicle carrying him and police constables met with an accident at Dharapuram near Tiruppur. A lorry brushed against the police vehicle, causing minor injuries to all the occupants.shank ar and the cons tables received medical attention before being transferred to a private hospital for further treatment. Late on saturday evening, sank ar was produced at a magistrate court in Coimbatore city.
Police also detained Shankar’s driver, Ram Prabhu, and another individual, Rajarathinam, in Theni district.
The video that led to his arrest also had derogatory remarks about the police force.
