aspects of governance and political life. Like the author, I too believe that our Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not a mock idealist but a realist and his policies will reflect the truth. We need to make sure that the decisions that affect us are not lifted from foreign countries without any research to support their suitability for the Indian populace. Sir, With reference to M.J. Akbar’s 1975: A coup against liberty ( Byline, 28 June), I remember my father talking about his experience with the Emergency. He remembers vividly how much his freedom was curtailed because of the curfew forbidding people to be out on the roads, even outside their own homes, after a certain time. According to him, many commoners were arrested without any reason and rumours about brutal interrogations and missing people abounded in Delhi in that period. However, I marvel at Indira Gandhi’s naiveté, that she expected to win the elections once the Emergency was lifted. How could she even imagine that people would forgive what she did to them? The sycophants around her were either too busy sweet-talking her or were simply too afraid of “the only man in the Cabinet” — as Indira was often called.
